| Some say the
Ruche’
vines were
imported from France a century ago; others say the variety is
indigenous
to the Monferrato hills around the city of Asti. Whatever the
case,
Ruche’ has only been cultivated commercially for a few decades, and
only
became a DOC in 1988. Today, Sant’Agata, making about 3,000 cases
annually, is the largest of about 35 producers who make a total 10,000
or so in 7 authorized locations. A "SuperRuche," from the best vines on
the estate, producing a tantalizingly delicious and unique
wine. What wine writer Craig Camp wrote about this wine years ago still holds true today: “…(Pro Nobis) is to regular ruche’ what Moulin-a-Vent is to normal Beaujolais. It has all the characteristics of the “Na Vota” on steroids.”
