"ALBAROSSA," SALICE SALENTINO ROSSO, DOC, 2004

Azienda Vinicola Palama'

Palama, a family operation, is located on the heel of the Italian "boot", in an area known as Salento in the Puglia (Apulia) region. The weather of this fertile area, tends to be hot and dry, contributing to the characteristic rich, "cooked" quality often found in these wines.

This is a big, fat, funky red, made with 80% Negroamaro, 20% Malvasia Nera. The wine has lots of chunky, mouth-filling flavors of pomegranates, dark plums, raisins and bananas. All set off against a heavy earthy background that, together, make this a really interesting wine -- far more complex for the money than you would ever expect to.

RECENT VINTAGE - 2003
“This one from a much less-known competitor is a revelation, boasting the fresh, clean fruit and earth flavors that we remember from a decade or two back, before so many Southern Italian producers turned to a more "international" style. Clear garnet in color, it shows fresh black cherries and subtle earth on the nose and palate, winding up with a lovely, gently bitter peach-pit finish.”
Robin Garr’s 30 Second Wine Advisor – May 22, 2006

“Medium bodied with a fresh red fruit bouquet and underlying flavors of raspberry and cherry plus a touch of cedar. Sweet grilled sausage.” Value Sante’ Magazine January 2006
