| 86 - "Plummy aromas, with hints of wet earth. Medium-bodied, with a fruity finish." Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2006 |
| In
1980 Bruno Porro and his wife Irma started a small 24 acre winery,
called
Ribote after an old beloved tree in front of an ancient stone farmhouse
on the property. The estate lies in Piedmont just east of the city of
Alba
in the heart of the Langhe region with its gently rolling hills. All
the
vineyards face south and are located at an altitude of 1100 to 1300
feet.
Ribote focuses almost entirely on Dolcetto, and all wines carry the
Dogliani
appellation (one of seven officially designated DOC zones). Bruno Porro
makes about 4,200 cases of wine per year divided into two crus: MONETTI
and RIBOTE. We selected the latter, impressed by the way it flies
in the face of Dolcetto's familiar image as "Italy's
Beaujolais." Uncertified Organic Wine (Producer states they do not use artificial fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. While we cannot prove the veracity of this, we also have no reason to believe it is not true.) Tasting notes: Wrapped in a robe of velvety tannins, the wine brims with aromas and flavors of currants, black raspberries and other dark-red berry fruits, and is laced with hints of black chocolate, coffee and cedar. |
